Who We Are

The Holy Name Band is a concert band based in Louisville, Kentucky.
Directed by Carolyn H. Cook, we can be found most Monday nights, September
to June, playing at community events, nursing homes, assisted living
facilities, or any place else good music is needed in the Louisville area.
All are welcome at any venue.
A typical concert lasts about an hour. You’ll hear a great mix of works from
classical to jazz to show tunes. And, of course, there is always a march or
two thrown in for good measure.
Founded by the Holy Name Society in 1939, the band is 50 players strong. No
longer associated with the society, our members come from all walks of life,
age groups and belief orientations. Everyone who joins the band becomes part
of a dedicated family of musicians.

The Holy Name Band circa 1942

A little history: Carolyn’s dad, Joe, was a band member for more than 70 years and directed the band for many of those years. Seven of the eight Herde children, along with many of their spouses, children and assorted cousins, have played with the band off and on.

What We Play

The band has a huge library of scores covering just about any type of music. We pull about an hour’s worth of tunes for each concert. Programs are a fun mix of classical, big band, show tunes, film scores, contemporary tunes and a few surprises. Since we are a band, we’ll always have to throw in a march, preferably a Sousa.

In November, we switch to a holiday program full of traditional favorites, sing-alongs, and some very interesting takes on the old classics. St. Nick himself has been know to make an appearance along with an elf or two. Bring your kids!
